On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at approximately 8:15 a.m., the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Porcupine Mountains Lake of the Clouds access area for a one vehicle personal injury accident. The deputy located a completely burned vehicle upon arrival off the roadway and a deceased female who was ejected as a result of the accident.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. 

Excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the accident, which is still under investigation. Michigan State Police (MSP) Accident Investigation Unit, MSP Motor Carrier Officers, Porkies DNR staff, SONCO EMS, Lahti’s Towing, Cane Funeral Home and the Ontonagon County Medical Examiner’s Office assisted at the scene.
