CALUMET — Calumet was treated to a performance of “Oliver!, The Musical” a stage play based off of the Charles Dickens 1838 novel Oliver Twist, on Thursday and Friday from the Calumet Players.

Anyone who witnessed the show requesting, “Please sir, I want some more,” will have Saturday, and Sept. 26-28, to view the play again, while those who have not yet seen the show the chance to plan for a trip to the Calumet Theatre to see it.

The musical first made it to the U.S. in 1963.

Oliver tells the story of an orphan, Oliver, who joins a pickpocket group after being thrown out from a workhouse. When Oliver is caught pickpocketing, he is taken in by a Mr. Brownlow and, as the play progresses, Oliver learns more about himself and Mr. Brownlow.

The play was written by Lionel Bart, with its premier debuting in 1960 in London and transforming the story into a musical. Jude Schmidt stars as Oliver for the Calumet Players’ production.

“The show is just one of the typical books that you would read in high school or grade school,” Calumet Theatre Board Chairman Dan Jamison said. “And basically what sets this apart is that the Calumet Players bring it to life with a cast of young and old.”

Jamison said excellent music and scenery can be expected from the show, with everything put together by the Calumet Players. He said the Theatre pulls the entire village together with its performances, and the Calumet Players decided to put Oliver together, due to it being a fun performance that would resonate with the people of the village.

“Come on out for your friends and neighbors who put on a show for you. You will recognize the theme of the show, it’s not some esoteric thing that is buried there. You’ll understand it the second the lights go,” Jamison said. “Just come on out for a cost effective, enjoyable evening or afternoon depending on if you get the one next weekend.”

Tickets can be purchased online at calumettheatre.com/box-office, by phone at 906-337-2610 or in person at the Calumet Theatre. The remaining shows run at 7:30 p.m. except for the Sept. 28 show, which begins at 2 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
