Farm on the Town provides community kids a glimpse of farm life

HANCOCK — Farm on the Town returned to the parking lot at Sunflower Books and Coffee Saturday. The popular event took place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hosted by Copper Country Farm Bureau, the event, more than a decade old, celebrated its fifth year at the Hancock location, after relocating from the former Book Worm book store in Houghton. It is an agricultural educational initiative that bring a glimpse of farming experience to town that features livestock, youth activities, and interactive educational stations.

This year, displays included farm animals such as goats, sheep, cows. Kids enjoyed a Young Farm Hands activity, and visit a maple syrup and honey bee display, along with a restored, early model John Deere Model H farm tractor. Kids were allowed to climb on, sit on driver’s seat and pretend to drive it.

The event is one of the largest local community-outreach initiatives of the summer season.

Judy Szyszkoski, promotion and education co-chair for Copper Country Farm Bureau, who has held her position for 25 years, said the event is one of the opportunities for kids to see farm animals.

“It’s educational for them, and tells them where their food comes from,” she said.

The event, as always, she said, was enjoying a great turnout, in spite of cooler weather and cloudy skies.

“We’re having a good turnout today,” she said. “The weather is a bit cooler today.”

Steve Palosaari, a Highland cattle breeder and member of the Midwest Highland Cattle Association, had livestock at the event and provided educational information on the breed to children and parents.

The breed, he explained, originates – as the name suggests – in the Scottish highlands and is known for its small, stocky animal and long hair.

“In the winter, they grow another layer of thick, shorter hair under the main coat,” he said to several children, “and in the summer, they shed that. The long hair they have throughout the summer protects them from flies.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
