Harbor Hunt to give riders a fun reason to explore bike trails

COPPER HARBOR — Summer is quickly approaching in one of the most beautiful areas in the Keweenaw. The Copper Harbor Trails Club (CHTC) will host three unique events during the rest of June. The event the club is most excited about taking place on June 20, Harbor Hunt.

Outreach and Engagement Coordinator Emily Ruonavaara said this event gives riders more options to explore places they might normally explore.

“Usually, people come to the Harbor and they have their routes [they] like to do,” she said. “But, this kind of gives it a little more purpose — to get to different places you might not have explored.”

Harbor Hunt takes riders throughout over 60 miles of Copper Harbor’s trail system and is themed after a scavenger hunt.

Riders will receive a checklist and a map at the 10 a.m. start. The rider who snaps the most photos, and checks off the most hidden spots, wins a free ticket to the “All You Can East Bluffet” — a mountain bike race held in August.

Ruonavaara said Harbor Hunt’s friendly competition should get people excited to explore the trails.

“It gets everyone out on the trails at the same time,” she said. “You can meet new people through friendly competition; it’s more about just getting outside and exploring new places with other people.”

Harbor Hunt is free for anyone to participate in. It runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Another event taking place on the Copper Harbor Bike Trails is Keweenaw Invasive Species Management Area (KISMA) Training on June 18. CHTC riders are in a unique position as the ones most familiar with the locale, the club said in a statement.

The club is partnering with KISMA to bring its invasive species training to club staff and community members.

Participants will have the opportunity to identify invasive species and help protect the Keweenaw’s native plants, wildlife and forests.

For the little bike riders in the family, the Junior MTB Camp gives them an opportunity to find out what they are made of on the trails. This four-day camp takes place from June 14-17 and welcomes intermediate to advanced junior mountain bikers and high school racers.

While registration is closed, the Junior MTB camp runs every year in June and there will be more opportunities for young riders to experience the trails, Ruonavaara said.

Weekly group rides on Thursdays also give the opportunity for newer riders, veteran riders or visitors a chance to explore the trails. The rides start at 6:30 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
