ONTONAGON TOWNSHIP — In the aftermath of last week’s storm hitting the Copper Country, Ontonagon Township Park’s campground was in a state of disarray. After a week of repairs and clean-up, the campground is almost fully operational. Only three sites out of the 82 are unusable at press time. 

Campground Manager Matt Morgan said 60 trees came down last Monday but there were no injuries.

“For campers themselves, there was very little damage,” he said. “We had two vehicles that were totaled out, and then a side by side, its roofing was crushed a little bit.”

According to Morgan, 73 campers occupied the campground during the storm and the grounds stayed open. 

Photos from the Ontonagon Volunteer Fire Department circulated on Facebook in the days following the storm. Downed trees and branches were visible on many roads and residents’ front yards. Morgan said he never had seen any form quite like last Monday’s. 

“We get some pretty good storms once in a while, but nothing like this,” he said. “And it was sudden; it wasn’t called for or anything. It was pretty calm about 15 to 20 minutes before.”

The campground is still in the process of cleanup, but it is around 90-95 percent operational, Morgan said. Removing fallen trees, debris and tidying up affected camp sites is next on Morgan’s agenda and said he is looking forward to the rest of the season despite the minor setback.

“We’re cleaning up and a lot of the campers are stepping up and cleaning up their own areas and helping us out,” he said. “So, things are coming together.”
