Gladstone's Very Own Christmas Train

GLADSTONE — Thanks to Donations once again this year by the community of Delta County and the Upper Peninsula, Soo Line Steam Engine #730 has come alive again with Christmas lights and Ribbons and Bows.

Located along U.S. Highway 2 & 41 in Gladstone, the Soo Line Steam Locomotive #730 has stood as a proud historical landmark since 1960, when the Soo Line Railroad leased it to the Soo Line Retirees and union members for care and maintenance. For decades, these retirees faithfully preserved the engine, but as time passed, most have passed away and the responsibility could no longer be sustained.

Under the leadership of John Pickard, these volunteers established the Gladstone Michigan Soo Line Steam Engine #730 Authority, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Their efforts brought the locomotive out of disrepair, restored its dignity, and secured its future through organized fundraising and community support. Recognizing the importance of this landmark, a dedicated group of local volunteers stepped forward more than three years ago to ensure its survival.

The Authority has since created an endowment fund at the Delta County Community Foundation to guarantee perpetual care of the locomotive long after the current generation of volunteers is gone. This fund also supports the Authority’s long-term vision: the establishment of a Welcome Center and Historical Museum, which will further honor Gladstone’s rail heritage and provide educational and cultural benefits for residents and visitors alike.

Through the commitment of volunteers, the leadership of Pickard, and the generosity of the community, the Soo Line Steam Locomotive #730 continues to stand as a symbol of Gladstone’s history, pride, and future.
