GCC hosts Spring Quiz Bowl Tournament

Houghton HS teams finish one-two

IRONWOOD — Gogebic Community College hosted the annual Spring Quiz Bowl Invitational Tournament on March 20. The event once again highlighted the value of scholarly competition, teamwork, and the shared excitement of learning.

This year’s tournament featured 20 teams from 11 different schools, including: Bayfield, Bessemer, Calumet, Dollar Bay, Houghton, Hurley, Ironwood, Jeffers, Mercer, Wakefield-Marenisco, and Watersmeet. The teams were divided into two divisions hosting twelve varsity teams and eight junior varsity teams competing throughout the day, filling classrooms across the GCC campus with fast-paced matches covering a strong mix of questions designed to test knowledge, encourage quick thinking, and promote collaboration.

Competition throughout the day was intense. The Varsity division featured an exciting finish, with four teams advancing to the championship semifinals: Houghton 1 vs. Jeffers, and Houghton 2 vs. Calumet. In a rare and memorable outcome, both Houghton teams advanced, setting up a championship game between Houghton 1 and Houghton 2. “The final was one of the most exciting in recent years, with Houghton 2 capturing the championship by a score of 460-410,” said Dave Rowe, Quiz Bowl Coordinator.

In the Junior Varsity Championship, Wakefield-Marenisco faced Mercer 2 in a strong final match, with Mercer 2 earning the title with a 245-185 victory.

Special thanks to Quiz Bowl Coordinators, Dave Rowe and Ted Sim, retired area high school teachers, for organizing another successful day of academic competition with continued support and guidance from former Quiz Bowl director Carl Vaara, whose dedication over the years helped build the event into one of the region’s most respected academic competitions.

The success of the tournament depends on the dedication of many volunteers, and the organizers extended special thanks to everyone who helped make the day possible.

Starting at $3.50/week.
