CALUMET -- The Keweenaw Land Trust will celebrate its 30th year of operation with its first Land Jam festival since 2019. Four regional bands will play live music from 4 thru 10 p.m., Saturday at Calumet Commons Green Space on 5th Street in Calumet.
KLT Executive Director B Lauer said the Land Trust is hoping to raise upwards of $100,000 to go towards a purchase of a parcel of land in Keweenaw County through the Trudell family.
"If all goes well, this won't be the only nature area we add this year," she said. "We're grateful for any support from the community to make these public nature areas possible."
Steve Jones and the Tall Grass Band, Keweenaw Brewgrass, Make-Believe Spurs and Brookie will highlight the evening. Food will be provided by Bosio Biscuits and Copper Island Bagels. The Land Trust will be selling alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
Keweenaw Land Trust's Land Jam came into fruition after the success of its 2013 Dam Jam, which funded the purchase of Hungarian Falls in Hubbell. Lauer said the event has varied in size throughout the years, but she hopes this year's celebration will be its biggest.
"It [Dam Jam] shifted into Land Jam because it became more broadly applicable," she said. "But it was always to help raise money to protect new nature areas and to steward those in our other protected lands."
According to Lauer, around 120 tickets have been sold at press time. The Land Trust hopes to reach its cap of 250 tickets. It is currently looking at alternate locations for Land Jam Saturday, due to weather and smoke concerns. Updates will be posted on The Land Trust's website and Facebook page if the venue is moved.
Tickets are available on Keweenaw Land Trust's website. Online pre-sale is $30 and at-the-door tickets are $40. A Land Trust membership can also be added on for an additional $20. Doors for Land Jam open at 3:30 p.m.
