CALUMET -- The Red Jacket Jamboree is 7 p.m. Saturday at the Calumet Theatre. The Copper Country throwback-radio show will return for its tenth season. The show is hosted by Lena Dorey and Martin Achatz. Episodes 65 and 66 will be recorded live and will feature music, poetry, stories and Keweenaw history.
Real People Media Executive Director Rebecca Glotfelty said the Jamboree's overarching goal is helping people truthfully get their stories out there into the world.
"We want our shows to be fun and we're not doing a lecture on stage," she said. "The purpose is to come out with some greater understanding and insight."
Among the featured performers is jazz vocalist Jana Nyberg. The Copper Cats will be joining Nyberg for her performances, completing a full ensemble band. Bill Carrothers will play piano, Jerry Younce on guitar, Copper Luedtke on bass and Eddie Carrothers on drums.
Keweenaw photographer Charles Eshbach will make an appearance at the Jamboree as a story teller. Rounding out the lineup will be A Capella group Daybreak.
The 65th episode's theme for the first recording will be "Sun, Moon and Stars." Glotfelty said this episode will tackle an recent environmental movement int he region.
"One of the reasons why we picked "Sun, Moon and Stars" is because of the Keweenaw Peninsula's efforts for the Dark Sky Movement," she said. "We use our musicians to help show that story so you can anticipate that there will be songs and poetry related to the Sun, stars and moons."
"Yooperheroes" will be the 66th recorded episode of the Red Jacket Jamboree. Glotfelty said this episode will focus on significant historical figures of the Copper Country's past.
"The "Yooperheroes" is a take on superheroes," she said. "That will be focusing on a few iconic heroes and heroines in the Keweenaw, or in the U.P. in general."
