HOUGHTON - This Friday, Oct. 16, the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, led by Michigan Tech’ Department of Visual and Performing Arts Chairman Joel Neves, celebrates our nation’s semiquincentennial with “America at 250.”
The program features music by all-American composers such as John Williams, Duke
Ellington, John Philip Sousa, and Aaron Copland. Along with the music, the program will
include on screen projections featuring images from throughout American history,
including works by American painter Norman Rockwell which inspired one of the musical
pieces being performed.
This first Keweenaw Symphony Orchestral performance of the season is a
celebration of our United States, the artists it has inspired, and the artwork our country has helped cultivate.
The Michigan Tech Concert Choir will join the orchestra for a performance of Battle Hymn of the Republic. Michigan Tech's premier jazz ensemble, the Jazz Lab Band, will also make an appearance to perform Duke Ellington's Grand Slam Jam. The second half of the program will be led by guest conductor Kory Katsneanes who served as a violinist and Assistant Conductor for the Utah Symphony from 1975 to 2002, and as Professor of Music and Director of Orchestras at Brigham Young University from 1999 through 2023.
Katsneanes brings extensive leadership experience to the podium as he leads the orchestra through an extraordinary collection of American music. Friday's performance is a family friendly celebration of American creativity and expression. For 250 years the United States has been home to some of the most brilliant artistic minds the world has ever seen. This is a chance to enjoy a refined collection of their works performed by some of the most talented local musicians our area has to offer.
