LANSING -- The Haunted History Trail of Michigan has launched with eight locations across the state, inviting travelers to discover historic places through their ghost stories, local legends and unexplained experiences. Developed with Coldwater Country, Discover Kalamazoo and Visit Keweenaw, the new Trail gives curious visitors a way to plan trips around Michigan's haunted heritage.
The Trail is a self-guided travel resource, rather than a single tour or fixed route. Travelers can browse participating locations, learn the history behind their reported hauntings and choose the stops that interest them. Experiences vary by location and may include guided tours, paranormal investigations or a visit to the grounds during public hours.
The inaugural collection ranges from historic homes and a theater to an abandoned Air Force station, cemeteries and eerie outdoor spaces across Michigan's Lower and Upper Peninsulas. Each location's listing shares its story and information to help visitors plan a visit. The website also features a haunted events calendar with upcoming tours, investigations and other experiences.
The Michigan launch marks the first expansion of the Haunted History Trail, which began in New York State in 2013. The New York Trail now features more than 80 locations and brings together 30 destination marketing organizations. Its collaborative model connects travelers interested in the paranormal with the communities and historic sites behind the stories.
"Michigan has no shortage of places with a story to tell, and some of the most intriguing stories are the ones people still can't quite explain," said Riley Kruer, Haunted History Trail Manager. "The Trail gives visitors a reason to step inside these places, meet the people who care for them and discover the history behind the haunting."
Two locations in the Keweenaw are on the Haunted History Trail of Michigan, The Calumet Theatre and the former Calumet Air Force Station.
