Unemployment Insurance claimants issued new debit cards

Benefits will now be posted to U.S. Bank card

LANSING — The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is reminding claimants who receive their benefit payment on a debit card that a new debit card for accessing their funds was issued by U.S. Bank. Claimants began receiving their new debit cards in early August.

The State of Michigan changed its debit card provider for unemployment benefits from Bank of America to U.S. Bank earlier this year. As of Aug. 25, new unemployment funds will post to the new U.S. Bank debit card.

Claimants may continue to use their current Bank of America debit card until Nov. 30. Bank of America extended the original Nov. 1 deactivation date to ensure cardholders have adequate time to use or transfer all remaining funds. Be sure to review all Bank of America correspondence for updates on key deadlines.

Claimants are advised to review any correspondence they receive from Bank of America regarding deadlines and how to access funds on Bank of America’s debit cards.

Funds on the Bank of America debit card cannot be transferred to the new U.S. Bank debit card, however any remaining funds can be transferred to a checking or savings account at a bank or credit union.

Individuals who have not yet received their new debit card are urged to verify that the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency has their current address on file. Claimants may update their contact information online through the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM) or by calling UIA customer service at 866-500-0017.

Claimants have the option of receiving unemployment benefits via direct deposit to their bank or credit union, or through a U.S. Bank debit card. About a quarter of claimants opt to receive their payment via debit card.

More information on the change in debit cards will be provided via email, mail or through the MiWAM portal.
