ISHPEMING — In advance of this summer’s Barnes-Hecker cemetery tours, National Honor Society students from both Ishpeming High School and Westwood High School will participate in a community outreach effort to clean the miners’ headstones and commemorative stones at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Ishpeming High School NHS students will clean the stones on, May 4, at 12:30 p.m. followed by Westwood High School NHS students on Monday, May 11, at noon. Their work will help prepare the site for the upcoming self-guided cemetery tours marking the 100th anniversary honoring the 51 men who lost their lives in the November 3, 1926 Barnes-Hecker Mine disaster.
The self-guided tours will take place on, July 19, from 1-4 p.m. and August 16, from 1-4 p.m. Maps indicating the locations of the miners’ headstones will be available at the sexton’s office near the main entrance gates of the cemetery.
