LANSING – The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is providing guidance to local school districts about how to best use artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms as the technology becomes more prevalent.

MDE officials at this month’s State Board of Education meeting shared details from the department’s recently released AI guidance resources.

“AI can be a good learning and teaching tool if used properly,” said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko. “I use AI. But we need to make sure our educators and our students understand AI and know how to use it appropriately.”

Guidance can be found on the MDE Artificial Intelligence webpage.

Included are essential practices for districts to consider, including guidance on how to:

• Keep AI purposeful and safe.

• Protect privacy and integrity.

• Build AI literacy.

• Maintain human oversight.

• Promote equity and accessibility.

• Support transparency and continuous improvement.

“This comprehensive guide provides Michigan school districts with structured administrative guidelines for implementing responsible AI practices across organizational roles, policy and operations,” said Delsa Chapman, deputy superintendent for the MDE Division of Assessment, School Improvement, and Systems Support. “It offers practical examples and templates to help district leaders establish clear guardrails of AI use in teaching and learning.”

MDE encourages each district to start or continue conversations regarding the use or implementation of AI tools. MDE is committed to continuing to support districts with quality AI resources as they become available.

Starting at $3.50/week.
