Trinity Episcopal Church celebrates ordination of new pastor
On Saturday, December 10 at 11 a.m., the Rev. Sarah Diener-Schlitt will be ordained to the priesthood at Trinity Episcopal Church in Houghton. All members of the community are invited to witness and celebrate this sacred service.
The Rev. Sarah has been serving as Deacon at Trinity since June of this year, shortly after graduating from The Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. She is a northerner, however, having grown up in Duluth, Minnesota, where she also attended UM-D.
Sarah and her family–husband Thomas and son Mackenzie–are enjoying their first months in the Keweenaw. She has already lifted Trinity and its members with her deep spirituality, thoughtful preaching and relentless good humor.
She is affecting a resurrection of sorts; before she was called to Houghton, Trinity had been without full-time clergy for several years. She is developing or expanding multiple significant ministries of the church, all oriented to serving the diverse needs of a diverse community.
On a recent blustery day, she observed that “I am honored that I will be ordained among the people I feel so deeply called to serve. Ministry in the wider church at this point in our shared history can be both complicated and a blessing. Alongside a community clearly devoted to fellowship and caring for their neighbor, I’m grateful to be digging into the complicated and blessed work of recognizing the needs of the community around us, and listening to how the Spirit might be calling us to work with her to meet those needs, in ways that might surprise us. I am excited to join in that work.”
