Cross Country Sports has something for mom

A full line of bikes, clothing and accessories

Chelsea Bossert/Daily Mining Gazette Cross Country Sports is helping celebrate Mother’s Day with sales on apparel and accessories, as well as brand-new bicycles for Mom. They are located at 507 Oak St., in downtown Calumet.

CALUMET — Mother’s Day is fast approaching and Cross Country Sports in downtown Calumet is shifting into high gear. From bicycles, to apparel and accessories — everything for the mom and all who are into outdoor adventures is covered.

Co-owner of Cross Country Sports, Rick Oikarinen, said his store is all about healthy living for everyone — which includes Mom.

“We’re the Trek dealer locally, and they’re easily the biggest brand in the United States. We have a full selection of all types of bikes,” he said. “We have e-bikes, mountain bikes, hard trails, so-called city bikes, gravel bikes, road bikes. Whatever type of bike you’re looking for, we can handle it — we have it.”

Flowers and candy may not be the perfect Mother’s Day gifts for every mom. A new bike might just be what the mom on your list is hoping for. Oikarinen said owning a bike is one of the healthiest choices you can make. “It’s a healthy thing to do and you don’t have jarring on your joints, like running or even walking,” he said. “It’s kind of easy on your body and you can work as hard as you want to.”

Oikarinen established the store, alongside his wife and co-owner, Lorri, in 1962. They have been promoting outdoor activities, like skiing and bike riding, for generations in the Copper Country. Oikarinen said another option for Mom is an e-bike. He said e-bikes are a useful alternative if a rider wants to go longer distances, is inexperienced or is an older enthusiast.

“You’re going out for a ride and you went out a little farther than you thought — because it’s such a nice day — and you need a little help getting back … that’s what e-bikes are for,” he said. “I’m not as young as I used to be. I have an e-bike.”

There are three classes of e-bikes for customers to choose from, class one, two and three. Each increase in class increases the top speed of the e-bike. Oikarinen said he has a single-speed, class one e-bike for as low as $899.

“It’s like the old style cruiser,” he said. “Upright handlebars, wide seat, fenders — and it’s cool.”

If Mom needs her bicycle repaired, Cross Country Sports has it covered as well. Oikarinen and the team in Calumet do all kinds of bike repair on traditional bicycles and e-bikes.

“We service all whatever is wrong with your bike, we can handle it,” he said. “The only thing we don’t service is off-brand electronic components.”

If a bicycle does not sound right for Mom, or if she already has one, apparel and accessories are now on-sale at Cross Country Sports.

“We do have multiple things on sale and virtually every type of thing,” he said. “We have jackets on sale, we’ve got some shorts on sale, we got some gloves on sale. So, if there’s smaller items you want, because you already have a biker in the house — we can do that.”

Spring has arrived in the Keweenaw — ski hills are closed and now the many beautiful and exhilarating bike trails are open to enjoy. Oikarinen said the weather is still cold, so his best advice is to come to the store and purchase something to wear under your workout gear.

“We still have some cooler days, so we actually stock base layers and tights that are insulated,” he said. “Some windbreaker jackets, rain jackets, everything that’s gonna make biking comfortable and easier to do.”

Whether it is a new bicycle for Mom, rain gear for a wet day, accessories for a smooth ride or fixing up an older bike — Oikarinen and Cross Country Sports in Calumet has what Mom needs for Mother’s Day.

“So, the name of the game is comfortability and being healthy,” he said. “That includes Mom.”
