HANCOCK -- The Houghton County Fair Association was established as an Agricultural Fair 75 years ago and livestock has always been central to the annual August celebrations. According to a press release from Houghton County Fair Association, our county has a rich history of agriculture and the Fair is where agriculture meets the public.
This year there are 41 youth exhibitors that have worked very hard on their Junior Market Livestock projects. There are nine youth raising beef steers, 12 raising market lambs, 13 raising market sheep, two raising market goats, and new this year, three are raising market chickens and one has raised a market rabbit.
Small animals will be judged on Thursday afternoon and all of the large animals will be judged on Friday, beginning with the hogs at 10 a.m., cattle at 1 p.m., and sheep and goats at 4 p.m. The livestock auction will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the show ring in the livestock barn at the north end of the fairgrounds. The sale order will be grand and reserve champion beef, lambs, hogs, and goats, followed by the other large animals, and then the small animals.
Other livestock entries include cattle, sheep and goats in non-market classes, typically considered the breeding classes. These animals are housed in the livestock barn and the horse barn. Hogs are in the open pavilion just south of the livestock barn. Small animals including turkeys, ducks, chickens, quail, and rabbits will be in the Small animal barn. There will be horses, mini horses, and donkeys in the north end of the horse barn, with sheep, goats and some of the cattle in the south end of the horse barn. Brand new to the fair will be a PONY PULL in the horse arena at 3 p.m. on Friday.
The fair also expects exceptional entries this year from local farms and gardens in the departments for horticulture, field crops, and floriculture in the Exhibit Building. These exhibits are displayed in the Youth Exhibit area and the Open Exhibit area, along with the arts and crafts departments which include needlework, culinary arts, fine and folk arts, photography, and antiques.
The buildings are open to the public at 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, and opens at noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Buildings close at 10 p.m., except on Sunday when the entire fair closes at 5 p.m.
