New faces coming to Baraga, Ontonagon municipal boards

BARAGA – The November 8 general election will bring some new faces to municipal boards in Ontonagon and Baraga counties.

Anyone interested in being included on the August 2 primary ballot must file by 4 p.m. Tuesday. County candidates file at their county clerk’s office, while village and township candidates file with their respective township clerks.

Ontonagon County

Ontonagon County incumbents who have filed for reelection are: Clerk Stacy C. Preiss, Treasurer Jeanne M. Pollard, Prosecutor Michael D. Findlay, Sheriff Dale Rantala, District 2 Commissioner Richard Allen Bourdeau, and District 4 Commissioner Carl R. Nykanen. In addition, David A. Nykanen is running for the District 3 commissioner seat. So far no one has filed to run for the remaining open Ontonagon County seats: neither mine inspector, nor the district 1 and 3 commissioners, Ontonagon County Clerk Stacy C. Preiss said. The township clerks will send her their slates later this month.

Three Ontonagon Village Council trustees and the village president are up for re-election.

President Ken Waldrop, as well as trustees Donald Chastan, Mike Mogan and Elmer Marks will decide if they want be on the ballot, along with any other candidates seeking one of these seats. The village president serves a two-year term, while the others serve for four years.

Baraga County

While no one has filed for Baraga County prosecuting attorney, mine inspector or district 5 commissioner, other county candidates are: Gale W. Eilola, district 1 commissioner; Michael R. Koskinen, district 2 commissioner; Patrick Reilley, district 3 commissioner; William Menge and Calvin R. Koski, district 4 commissioner; Wendy J. Goodreau, clerk/register of deeds; Anne T. Koski, treasurer; and Rick Johnson and Paul D. Smith, sheriff.

So far all but one Baraga township have informed Baraga County Clerk Wendy Goodreau of several candidates.

Arvon Township hopefuls are: James Soli, supervisor; Lisa M. Marinich, clerk; Krystal Larson, treasurer; and Keith A. Erickson and Karl G. Gipp, trustees.

In Baraga Township, the slate to date includes: Amy Isaacson, supervisor; Michelle A. Fish, clerk; Catherine Wadaga, treasurer; Jerry Dompier and Glenn Juntunen, trustees.

Covington Township’s Steven T. Salli is running for supervisor; Amy J. Leaf for clerk; Lisa M. Karcher for treasurer; and Lisa Tarvainen for trustee.

L’Anse township candidates are: PJ LeClaire, supervisor; Brian Jentoft, clerk; Kristine Rice, treasurer; Dan Grandy, Shelley Lloyd and Peter Magaraggia, trustees; and John Robillard, constable.

The county clerk hasn’t heard who the Spurr Township candidates are yet, but the township will seek funding for ambulance and emergency medical technician services.

Arvon Township residents will also consider a four-year .3 millage property tax to fund ambulance and EMT services, which would raise about $12,693.54 the first year.
