Park, walkway, street work still on to-do list

BARAGA – After 18 years on the job, Village Council President Wendell Dompier is not done yet. He is running as a nonpartisan for re-election.

“I’ve got a few more projects I’d like to see finished,” Dompier said, naming a proposed Veteran’s Park, walkway around the lake and ongoing street work as priorities.

He also wants to keep residents’ utility bills at a minimum.

“We tried to keep our electric and water rates as low as we can (and) try to make it affordable for the residents,” he said.

The village has completed major sewer and water enhancements during his tenure, as well as other projects.

“We’ve done a lot of work at our kids park and marina,” he added.

Dompier serves on the Michigan Municipal League Board of Trustees, Michigan Association of Mayors and Bay Ambulance Board of Trustees.

He is retired after working for the Ojibwa Casino in Baraga for more than 26 years.

A Baraga High School graduate, Dompier and his wife, Judith, live in Baraga, where he’s lived “pretty much” his whole life.

“I love to fish when I have free time, sometimes travel and just putz around,” he said.
