‘Bans off our bodies’ demonstration held

About 40 Copper Country residents, including march organizer Susan Burack, protest in support of abortion rights at the Portage Lake Lift Bridge in Houghton Saturday. The demonstration was one of more than 380 "Bans Off Our Bodies" protests held nationwide. The protests came after the leak of a draft U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. If unchanged, the decision would overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion nationwide. A U.S. Senate bill voted down Wednesday would have codified the legality of abortion, and also prevented several kinds of state laws, including bans of abortion before fetal viability, such as in the Dobbs case. The bill failed 49-51. (Garrett Neese/Daily Mining Gazette)
