Another COVID-19 death reported in Houghton County

HOUGHTON — State data Wednesday listed yet another death blamed on COVID-19 in Houghton County in the past week, along with 43 new confirmed virus positives in the seven-day span.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Wednesday added 308 confirmed positives to the Upper Peninsula’s tally since June 8: 75 in Marquette County, the 43 in Houghton County, 39 in Delta County, 30 in Gogebic County, 25 in Dickinson County, 20 in Menominee and Iron counties, 18 in Chippewa County, 14 in Baraga County, 10 in Mackinac County, five in Keweenaw County, four in Alger County, three in Ontonagon County and one each in Schoolcraft and Luce counties. The state recorded a virus-related death in Marquette and Dickinson counties, as well as Houghton.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 54,352 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 854 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Wednesday had Keweenaw County at 494 confirmed cases and 58 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 678 confirmed cases and 821 probable, 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 939 confirmed, 110 probable and 37 deaths, three probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,102 confirmed cases and 749 probable, 13 deaths and three probable; Alger County, 1,106 confirmed, 690 probable and eight deaths, five probable; Mackinac County, 1,722 confirmed cases and 903 probable, 28 deaths and three probable; Baraga County, 1,808 confirmed cases, 337 probable and 52 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,418 confirmed cases and 349 probable, 71 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 2,875 confirmed cases and 545 probable, 40 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 3,699 confirmed cases and 5,360 probable, and 86 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,105 confirmed cases, 1,752 probable and 61 deaths, 10 probable; Dickinson County, 5,201 confirmed cases and 2,503 probable, 89 deaths and 22 probable; Houghton County, 7,090 confirmed cases, 1,148 probable, 86 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 8,162 confirmed cases and 2,255 probable, 134 deaths and 24 probable; and Marquette County, 12,953 confirmed cases, 3,323 probable and 125 deaths, 11 probable.

State of Michigan figures sometimes can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Wednesday had 15,578 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since June 8, or an average of about 2,225 cases per day for the week’s span, for a total of 2,581,397 cases since COVID tracking began.

The state for the week added 137 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 36,675.
