COVID-19 update

HOUGHTON — COVID-19 numbers rose slightly for the week in three counties of the Mining Gazette coverage area, but overall virus activity continued to be low in the region, according to state data posted Tuesday.

Houghton County had 24 confirmed positives since Oct. 11, three more cases than a week earlier. Baraga County reported 12 new confirmed cases, up three from a week ago, and Keweenaw County had two new cases, only one more for the seven-day period. None of the counties had a death blamed on COVID-19 during the week.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Tuesday added 206 confirmed positives since Oct. 11 to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 34 in Marquette County, 28 in Delta County, 24 in Houghton County, 22 in Chippewa County, 16 in Iron County, 14 in Gogebic County, 13 in Mackinac County, 12 in Baraga County, 11 in Menominee and Ontonagon counties, eight in Schoolcraft and Dickinson counties, two in Keweenaw and Alger counties, and one in Luce County.

The state recorded two new virus-related deaths in both Iron and Chippewa counties.

Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 60,178 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 920 deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 566 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 14 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 758 confirmed cases and 860 probable, 15 confirmed deaths and two probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,109 confirmed, 128 probable and 40 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,224 confirmed, 805 probable and eight deaths, eight probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,277 confirmed cases and 806 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,901 confirmed cases and 958 probable, 31 deaths and four probable; Baraga County, 1,982 confirmed cases, 428 probable and 55 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,941 confirmed cases and 391 probable, 80 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,326 confirmed cases and 616 probable, 43 deaths and 31 probable; Chippewa County, 4,018 confirmed cases and 5,871 probable, and 93 deaths, 18 probable; Menominee County, 4,503 confirmed cases, 2,052 probable and 63 deaths, 13 probable; Dickinson County, 5,784 confirmed cases and 2,907 probable, 94 deaths and 24 probable; Houghton County, 7,885 confirmed cases, 1,216 probable, 92 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,721 confirmed cases and 2,937 probable, 139 deaths and 27 probable; and Marquette County, 14,183 confirmed cases, 3,877 probable and 139 deaths, 15 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Tuesday had 12,414 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Oct. 11, or an average of about 1,773 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,874,009 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 173 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 39,092.
