Uncles’ Local Diner now open

HANCOCK – Uncles’ Local Diner opened for business Wednesday morning. Offering hearty food, bad jokes and good (bottomless) coffee, the diner is located at 234 Quincy St. in downtown Hancock. It is located at the site of the former Kaleva Cafe, a 105-year-old Copper Country icon, which dates back to 1918.

Blake Williams, who co-owns the diner with his father, Daryll, and his brother-in-law, Al, said that Uncles’ will try to keep the traditional Kaleva menu specials, but some modern additions have been placed on the menu, as well.

“We offer lunch from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.” Blake Williams said. “We’re trying to keep the traditional Kaleva menu, then we’ve built off of that with our special Unc Sauce, and we have burritos and breakfast bowls. So, we’ve done a bit of a spin-off from the Kaleva menu, but we’re trying to keep some of the Kaleva specials on the menu.”

Unc Sauce is a homemade special sauce, with a balance of tany and smoky, for burgers, breakfast sandwiches, tater tots, and anything that desires “just the right amount of kick.”

The Williams trio is aware of the tradition of the Kaleva as an icon in the Copper Country.

“The Kaleva has been a local staple for generations — a place where your grandparents (or even great-grandparents) gathered for their coffee clutch,” the diner’s social media page said.

The diner is open 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. every day, except Tuesdays.

Starting at $3.50/week.
