Arrest made in auto theft
CALUMET — On Tuesday, deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Wisconsin man on auto theft charges in connection with a vehicle that had had been stolen the day before.
At approximately 12:35 p.m. Monday, deputies received a complaint from the Circle K gas station of a man attempting to steal two separate automobiles, according to a Tuesday morning release from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office. The man fled the scene before deputies arrived.
Later that afternoon, a Ford pickup truck was reported stolen in Calumet Township. Deputies, with assistance from other agencies, searched the area without success.
At approximately 1 a.m. Tuesday, deputies located the stolen truck, after a tip from a local off-duty police officer. The truck was identified during a traffic stop and the suspect was arrested and taken in custody. He is currently lodged in the Houghton County Jail.
The Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Laurium Village Police Department, Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office and Superior Service Towing.
