Changing Hands
Longtime business has new owner
HOUGHTON — Since its humble beginning in Donna and Brian Berryman’s garage in 1991, Superior Equipment & Events has provided top-notch equipment rentals and sales, as well as premium event planning and organizing services, to the Keweenaw. Despite their success and raving reviews, the Berrymans have decided to step down from the business.
“Superior Equipment and Events has sold the event side of the business and are closing the equipment rental and sales side of the business to retire.” said Donna Berryman, Vice President of Superior Equipment and Events. “We have loved this business, but it is time for us to turn it over to others.”
“My husband convinced me I would only have to work half a day, 4 hours a day, I thought, ‘Sign me up!'” Berryman reminisced when asked about the business’ creation. “He meant half of twenty-four hours a day!” she joked. Superior Events was a popular choice in the area, especially for weddings and proms.
“Just can’t say thank you enough!” one testimonial for Superior Events reads. “Plain and simple, if it wasn’t for you the prom would not have been. Thank you for the countless hours and effort you put into the prom, you definitely made it a prom to remember. We were lucky and blessed to have you work with us.”
“I just had to write and thank you for all of your help with making our wedding perfect,” another customer wrote. “I know that everyone always says that things will go wrong on that day, but it doesn’t matter…well, I honestly don’t think anything went wrong for us, it was just what we wanted.”
Superior Events will now operate as Superior Events of Houghton, LLC. Superior Equipment will close permanently, as Berryman stated.
“After serving the Keweenaw for over 30 years, it’s time for Superior Equipment to close up shop.” their website reads. “But we’re going out with a bang, selling off our entire inventory of tools, machinery, and equipment.”
In a statement to the community, Superior Equipment and Events wrote, “The decision was not easy, we began this business out of our garage in 1991. We have been honored to have been able to serve the thousands of wonderful customers, who have become friends … Thank you for your business!”
During their operation Superior Equipment was heavily involved in the community. They participated in events such as the Bounce-O-Rama, put on by the Superior Child Abuse Prevention Council. In 2024, the business was nominated for the Keweenaw Community Sparkplug Award, given to organizations that demonstrate exceptional growth, service, innovation, and community contributions.
