State Police warn of text scam
Several instances reported locally
HOUGHTON — Michigan State Police are warning the public to be aware of a new scam that has been reported state wide. Lt. Benjamin Eckola, MSP Eighth District public information officer, said the scam has been reported throughout the Upper Peninsula including the Keweenaw.
Eckola explained how this latest scam works. “Citizens get a text message from someone claiming to be from the State of Michigan “DMV”. The message threatens legal action against the citizen and driver’s license suspension for failure to pay, with an associated link to pay the fees.”
Eckola stressed the text messages are SCAMS, simply because Michigan does not have a DMV. The state agency that oversees driver’s licenses is the Michigan Department of State / Secretary of State. Eckola said the Secretary of State “will never ask people to send money or personal information via text message. Do not click on the link or provide any additional information. Delete the text.”
