Wisconsin mine dies in Ontonagon Gravel pit

ROCKLAND — The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a Wisconsin man in what it described as a “fatal mine accident” Thursday near Rockland. According to a Sheriff’s Department press release, a deputy was dispatched at 2:20 p.m. Thursday to assist EMS personnel on an accident that occurred in the Highpoint Gravel Pit in Rockland Township.

Upon his arrival, the deputy discovered the victim, identified as 50 year old Terry Gene Johnson of Manawa, Wisconsin, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

The incident is being investigated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The sheriff’s department says no further details will be released until the investigation is complete..

Assisting at the scene was SONCO Ambulance, Michigan State Police, Michigan DNR Law Enforcement, Rockland Volunteer Fire Department, Ontonagon County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Cane Funeral Home.
