Manager updates council
HANCOCK — Summer is coming to a close and Fall is fast approaching, and the changing of the seasons is bringing the changing of events to Hancock. City Manager Mary Babcock’s report to the city council during its meeting Wednesday evening informed the council and public of what to expect for the rest of August and September as well as other happenings within the city.
The city’s Movies at Dusk will have its last showing on Quincy Green next Thursday and feature Ghost Busters. The Hancock Business Association will provide movie candy for attendees. The End of Summer Celebration on Sept. 6 will include multiple games and vendors on Quincy Green along with ping pong ball drops, one for children and another for adults. A street dance will be available from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. with music provided by Chad Brogan and the Collective. The event will be concluded following the street dance with a laser light show.
Registration for a space within the city campground for “Hancock Lights the Night,” a Christmas light show, is coming to a close. Interested families or groups who would like to put up a holiday themed light display in a campsite for the winter have until Aug. 29 to call and make a reservation. So far 20 organizations are registered along with two the city is waiting for confirmation. Those who are interested in assisting the event but not putting up a campsite display can help with background decorations.
The demolition of 224 Quincy St. is now expected to conclude by Sept. 5 and will then be walled off by a six foot fence, which will be used for signage to promote concepts for the site’s redevelopment.
HoCo Arena will begin the process of putting ice in the week of Sept. 8, and Babcock anticipates there will be no problem keeping the arena full this season.
Phase Two of the Business and Technology Park’s schedule has seen recent changes because of utility issues. “There was some cable that had not been put in the correct place, so they’re a couple weeks behind,” Babcock said. “So the blacktop will not be done before school starts, but it will be shortly after that. It should be completed by the end of September.”
The city sold 602 Oak Lawn Drive to Copper Country Intermediate School District. Babcock said the CCISD has submitted their zoning application for the house to be built on the site as part of the CTE program.
