Voters approve elder nutrition millage request

Copper Shores expresses gratitude

HOUGHTON COOUNTY — Despite defeating two other millage increases, voters in Houghton County said yes to an elder nutrition millage proposed by Copper Shores Community Health Foundation. The revenue generation would support and expand the Meals on Wheels program in the county. With 8,288 votes cast, the proposal passed 4,336 to 3,871.

On Wednesday afternoon, Copper Shores CEO Kevin Store issued the following statement on behalf of the Houghton County Elder Nutrition Committee:

“Copper Shores Community Health Foundation and the Houghton County Elder Nutrition Committee are pleased to announce the passage of the Elder Nutrition Millage for Houghton County. This is a landmark initiative that will significantly enhance elder nutrition for Houghton County residents, particularly in rural areas.

The passing of this millage is a testament to the compassion and foresight of the voters in our community. It demonstrates a shared understanding and vision of the vital importance of ensuring that our senior citizens, who have contributed so much, have access to nutritious foods, socialization and wellness checks that help them thrive and continue living independently at home.

The Meals on Wheels program not only serves food but also helps seniors maintain independence, health and dignity – many of whom face unique challenges within our large, rural county. The funds from the Elder Nutrition Millage will go toward the day-to-day costs of running the Meals on Wheels program and expanding services throughout Houghton County.

More specifically, funding from the millage will support and expand critical services throughout Houghton County by:

• Removing seniors from the existing Meals on Wheels waiting list

• Identifying and establishing new Meet & Eat locations

• Planning and establishing new meal delivery options in unserved areas

In addition to continuing to provide financial and in-kind operating support, Copper Shores remains committed to providing infrastructure and capital investments that help Meals on Wheels scale production and provide quality services that are fiscally responsible.

We extend our deep appreciation to everyone who engaged in this important conversation. Your passion and dedication are an inspiration. We also acknowledge the concerns and suggestions that have been presented over the past two months during millage public information sessions. We aspire to operate the best program possible and will work to alleviate concerns and incorporate ideas for program improvements as appropriate. Again, thank you – everyone – for your opinions, suggestions and for taking the time to meet with us.

Most importantly, thank you to the more than 8,200 citizens that cast their vote. Your actions on Election Day sent a message that the elderly residents of Houghton County are important and valued. Your vote made a difference, and we are ready to fulfill the obligations identified within the millage proposal.

Updates on the progress Copper Shores Meals on Wheels makes over the coming years will be made regularly through local media, on our website and on social media outlets.
