Departments respond to Monday morning alarm
Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette Two fire departments responded to a report of a fire in Houghton on Monday. Cause of the alarm was a smoking kitchen vent.
HOUGHTON – At approximately 9:50 a.m. Monday, the Hurontown and Houghton City Fire Departments responded to a report of a structure fire on Woodland Road, in Houghton. No injuries were reported and the fire was quickly extinguished. The home was occupied at the time.
Houghton Fire fighter Buck Foltz said he believes the alarm was in response to a smoking exhaust vent in the home’s kitchen, adding the fire was extinguished by a conservation officer with the Michigan Department of Resources (DNR). “He responded to the call, Foltz said. “That’s very, very good.”
Foltz said structure fires are often put out by police. “You’d be surprised how often law enforcement extinguish fires, because they all have fire extinguishers in their vehicles,” he said. “They’ll run up on a scene, hit it with that, and save people from burning their whole house down.”
