County-Held Properties Committee to meet
HOUGHTON – The newly formed County-Held Properties Committee will hold a meeting at 9:30 a.m. Wed in the Conference Room on the fifth floor of the Houghton County Courthouse. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the pros and cons of all properties owned by Houghton County.
The properties owned by the county include:
• The Jail
• The marina, in Ripley
• Canal View (Houghton County Medical Care Facility), in Hancock
• The transfer station, in Atlantic Mine
• Houghton Country Memorial Airport
Other agenda items include discussion of future meeting dates and times, and any other matters the committee wishes to discuss. There will be a public comment period.
Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Kelly said this is one of three committees formed after the defeat of an August millage proposal for the construction of a new jail. The Board of Commissioners formed the Jail Committee, along with the County Held Properties and Sharon Avenue & Jail Property-Use committees.
The first official meeting of the County-Held Properties Committees was held on Sept. 10. According to Houghton County’s website, the purpose of the committee is to determine why the county owns the properties, the value of each, and if they are operating as they should.
Committee members are County Commissioner Glenn Anderson, Marina Harbormaster Jeff Goulette; Mario Paoli; Commissioner Joel Keranen; Canal View Administrator Adam Laplander, Andy Moyle and Country Materials Manager Curt Judson.
