Hancock, MI: The Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) announced the activaton of two new DC Fast Charging (DCFC) stations at the Keweenaw Co-op in Hancock. These new FLO 50kW chargers provide fast, reliable charging for electric vehicles (EVs) and serve as a link for travelers accessing the Keweenaw Na????onal
Historical Park and surrounding communities.
“EV charging sta????ons were always on the list of requested features for our new store. Thanks to funding support from Superior Watershed and the Na????onal Park Service Mobility Challenge, as well as planning support from the City of Hancock, we were able to make it a reality. The Keweenaw Co-op is pleased to be able to offer this service and help build the EV charging network in the UP,” said Curt Webb, General Manager of the Keweenaw Co-op.
The installations are part of the Na????onal Park Service Mobility Challenge through Michigan’s Office of Future Mobility & Electrification, an initiative to improve accessibility and sustainable transportation in Michigan’s national park gateway communities. The project supports the goals and initiatives outlined in the MI Healthy Climate Plan and the MI Future Mobility Plan, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, provide more accessible transportation infrastructure and support rural economic development across the Upper Peninsula.
In addition to the new Hancock site, SWP has installed DCFC stations in Munising near the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and in Marquette’s Lower Harbor Park, near the Presque Isle Marina. An additional DCFC station is currently being installed in Grand Marais.
These projects were also made possible through funding from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) under the Charge Up
Michigan grant program, which aims to expand the state’s EV charging network and support clean energy adoption. The new fast chargers at the Keweenaw Co-op feature dual CCS connectors and can deliver up to 50kW of power, providing most EVs with an 80% charge in about 30 minutes. The chargers are open to the public 24/7 and are visible on the FLO and PlugShare networks.
“By expanding fast-charging infrastructure in communi????es like Hancock, the SWP is making it easier for residents and visitors to explore Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in a cleaner, more sustainable way,” said Carl Lindquist, Executive Director of the Superior Watershed Partnership. “Each new charger is another step in building a low-emission transportation network for the Upper Peninsula.”
