Jail scam
Mackinac County Sheriff warns public
MARQUETTE — Mackinac County Sheriff Edward M. Wilk is warning residents of scammers who use the phone asking those receiving calls to pay bond for an inmate.
“Sheriff Wilk would like to remind everyone that no law enforcement personnel will call and demand payment over the phone for release of any of our inmates or any other inmate matters,” said a press release.
The sheriff’s office asks that if anyone receives any suspicious call regarding making payments over the phone for anything related to one of the past or current inmates, to call their office immediately at 906-643-1911.
“It appears that scammers are reviewing our online inmate app, and calling relatives of recently arrested individuals and demanding money to allow them to get out of jail, for reduced charges, etc.,” said the press release.
