Snowmobile fatality near Bessemer

BESSEMER TOWNSHIP — For the second time in just over a a week, a out of state snowmobiler has died a crash in the Upper peninsula. Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post, report the accident was reported at about 10:30 a.m. (CST) Sunday. Troopers were dispatched to the accident on Snowmobile Trail 2 in Gogebic County’s Bessemer Township.

According to a Michigan State Police press release, the preliminary investigation found the snowmobile was traveling eastbound on Trail 2 when the driver left the trail, lost control of the snowmobile, and struck a wooden post. Emergency medical care was administered at the scene, but efforts were unsuccessful. The driver of the snowmobile, a 61-year-old man from Luxemburg, Wisconsin passed away as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to have contributed to the crash.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this loss,” said Lt. Ben Eckola, MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer. MSP was assisted by the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan DNR, Beacon Ambulance, Bessemer Township Fire Department, and Gogebic County Victim’s Services.

The death marks the second this month in the Western UP. On Dec. 13, a 44 year old man from Illinois died as a result of an accident in Houghton County’s Elm River Township. Sherrif Josh Saaranen said the fatal accident happened on the Bill Nichols trail, across M-26 from Penegor Road.
