Fatal fire in Wakefield

WAKEFIELD — One person is dead as the result of an early Tuesday morning fire in Wakefield. According to the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department, first responders were dispatched to a residence on Kronberg Road in Wakefield shortly before 5:30 a.m. (CST) Tuesday. Police said that initial information indicated the structure had visible flames and there was one person believed to be inside.

Gogebic County deputies along with the Wakefield Fire Department promptly responded to the scene and, upon arrival, found that one resident outside who gave EMS personnel a general location for the resident inside the building.

The Sheriff’s department said, there were initial unsuccessful attempts to rescue the person trapped inside, as rescuers needed to retreat due to heavy smoke and flames. Firefighters were subsequently able to gain entry and discovered an individual who was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a press release, “In respect for the privacy of the involved parties, no names are being released at this time.”

The incident remains under investigation. The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office was supported throughout the response by se verall agencies include, the Wakefield Fire Department, Bessemer Township Fire Department, Beacon Ambulance and the Gogebic County Victim Services Unit.
