Fire destroys Laurium home

Paula Porter/For the Gazette Fire fighters from three different departments responded to a fire at a house in Laurium Sunday evening. No one was in the home at the time and no injuries were reported.

LAURIUM – No injuries were reported in connection with a structure fire that destroyed a house at 715 Lake Linden Avenue in Laurium Sunday evening. The fire was reported shortly before 7 p.m.

Three fire departments responded to the blaze, battleing high winds and whiteout conditions as well as the fire itself.

Calumet Township Supervisor Tim Gasperich, who is with the Calumet Village F.D., said the house was not occupied at the time of the fire, but someone was staying in the home temporarily. The occupants, he said, had left Sunday morning.

Laurium Village Police Chief Kurt Erkkila said he has spoken with the Laurium fire chief Monday morning. The house was a seasonal home and the son of the owners was staying in the house while he was in the area snowmobiling.

Erkkila said according to evidence, the fire appears to have been electrical in nature, and there were no plans to call the state fire marshal. Erkkila said the home is insured, but he did not know if the insurance company would conduct its own investigation.

Assisting at the scene were Calumet Village Fire, Calumet TWP, and Laurium Village fire departments, Laurium Village Police and Houghton County Sheriff’s Office.

McDonald’s of Houghton provided hot coffee and burgers to the Salvation Army to feed the firefighters at the scene.

Starting at $3.50/week.
