Ohio man dies in UP snowmobile crash

ALGER COUNTY — A 22-year old Ohio man died as a result of injuries he sustained in a snowmobile accident in the central U.P. Saturday.

According to a press release from the Michigan State Police, troopers from the Negaunee post responded to a report of snowmobile accident at approximately 10:30 Saturday night. The crash occurred on Snowmobile Trail 8 near County Road H-58 in Alger County’s Shingleton Township.

State Police said the preliminary investigation indicated the snowmobile was traveling on Trail 8 when the driver was unable to negotiate a corner on the trail and struck a tree at a high rate of speed.

Emergency medical aid was administered but was unsuccessful. The driver of the snowmobile, a 22-year-old man from Garrettsville, Ohio passed away due to the injuries sustained in the crash. The name of the individual has not been released.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this loss,” said Lt. Ben Eckola, MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer. MSP was assisted by Alger County EMS and Alger County Rescue 21.
