Snowmobile fatality in eastern UP
NEGAUNEE — A lower Michigan man died early Saturday afternoon in a snowmobile accident in the eastern Upper Peninsula. State Police at the St. Ignace post were called out just before 1 p.m. Saturday regarding a snowmobile crash on Bay City Lake Road near Trail 47 in Mackinac County’s Clark Township.
According to a Michigan State Police press release, the preliminary investigation found the snowmobile was traveling on Trail 47 when the driver hit a bump in the trail and was ejected off the snowmobile.
Emergency medical aid was administered at the scene but was unsuccessful and the driver of the snowmobile, a 61-year-old man from Saline, Michigan, died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.
According to the press release, neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have contributed to the crash. “We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones,” said Lt. Ben Eckola, MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer. MSP was assisted by Clark Township EMS, Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office, and the DNR.
The fatality happened just two days after a personal injury crash in Marquette County. Although no one was killed, a Marquette County snowmobiler was hospitalized when the sled he was driving collided with a snowmobile driven by a Michigamme teen. On New Year’s Day, personnel from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a snowmobile accident along Trail 8 near the Peshekee Grade. According to a Marquette Mining Journal article written by Antonio Anderson, a 73-year-old Ely Township snowmobile driver collided with a sled driven by a 15-year-old Michigamme boy on Thursday.
The 73-year-old, who police did not identify, was thrown from his sled and injured. He was taken to UP Health System-Bell in Ishpeming for evaluation and then later transported to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of injuries.
“The accident remains under investigation,” said the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department in a press release. “Deputies would like to remind everyone to Ride Right while on the trails to reduce accidents.”
The sheriff’s department was assisted by Michigamme Township First Responders, Michigamme Township Fire Department and UPHS EMS.
