Phi Kappa Tau repeats as statue winner

HOUGHTON — Phi Kappa Tau fraternity at Michigan Technological University captured its second straight win in the month-long statue competition in this year’s Winter Carnival. With this year’s theme “Through Ice and Snow, to Space We Go,” the Hancock fraternity’s winning statue, “Keweenaw in Another Universe,” shot them into first place overall, according to Michigan Tech’s chapter of Blue Key National Honor Society.
Blue Key, organizers of Winter Carnival, announced the snow statue winners Thursday afternoon, following judging earlier that day. There were 11 entries in the month-long division with second place going to Tau Kappa Epsilon for “Zathura,” while Delta Zeta and Delta Sigma Phi earned third place with “Futurama.” In the men’s division, Lambda Chi Alpha followed Phi Kappa Tau and Tau Kappa Epsilon, taking third place with “Hoth.”
In the women’s division, Alpha Sigma Tau took first place with “Aliens Around the World.”
“Futurama,” captured first place in the Co-ed division. Sigma Tau Gamma and Alpha Gamma Delta earned second place with “Spaceballs Parody.” Beta Sigma Theta and Delta Phi Epsilon captured third with “Lots of Aliens.”
In the All-Nighter snow statue competition, in which participants could only begin Wednesday afternoon and had to finish Thursday morning, Catholic Campus Ministries at St. Albert the Great University Parish earned first overall with their entry “Faith in Space.”

Of the 72 total one-night entries, Catholic Campus Ministries at St. Albert the Great earned the top spot in the co-ed division, with The Navigators and SAF Forestry Club in second and third, respectively.
In the women’s division, the Women’s Rugby Club placed first, Mind Trekkers placed second, and Society of Women Engineers placed third.
in the men’s All-Nighter division, Dungeons and Dragons placed first, followed by Blizzard Baja Enterprise in second place and Tombstone in third.
