Driver in pickup/train accident dies
ESCANABA — One of the women involved with a crash between a Toyota crew cab pickup truck and a Canadian National train perished from her injuries after being transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba on Thursday afternoon.
Shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday, the truck failed to yield to an oncoming train at the intersection of railroad tracks with a small road near 26th Lane in Brampton Township, reported the Michigan State Police. The pickup was struck by the southbound train and rolled onto the driver’s side.
Several agencies responded to the emergency and successfully removed both occupants — women aged 76 and 82, both of Gladstone — with the Jaws of Life.
The 76-year-old driver was transported to OSF St. Francis, where she died as a result of her injuries.
The passenger, also severely injured, was flown by Guardian Flight to HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Wis., where she remained in critical condition as of Friday.
