On ice training
Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette U.S. Coast Guard personnel from Station Portage, in Dollar Bay, conducted rescue training sessions near the Portage Lake bridge on Tuesday.
HOUGHTON – What many traveling over the Portage Lift Bridge Tuesday morning thought was a dramatic on-ice rescue, turned out to be important, however a bit less dramatic … an on-ice training session
What appeared to be two injured people needing rescue near the Portage Lake Lift Bridge Tuesday morning turned out to be a US Coast Guard training session.
The U.S. Coast Guard Station Portage, in Dollar Bay, confirmed the apparent rescue was an on-ice rescue training session.
In the session, two Coast Guardsmen laid on the ice, while a rescue team loaded them one at a time onto a sled, then transported them to a staging area near the Ramada Inn, on Navy Street.
No one was injured in the session.
