US News ranks MTU grad program in top 100

Chelsea Bossert/Daily Mining Gazette The R. L. Smith Building (MEEM) is just one of the many hubs for Michigan Tech’s engineering students to gather and learn. Michigan Tech recently was named the number 89 graduate engineering school in the country.

HOUGHTON — U.S. News and World Report released its graduate school rankings on Tuesday. Michigan Technological University ranked number 89 among other prestigious graduate engineering programs across the United States, such as University of Michigan, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Purdue University.

According to the rankings, Michigan Tech is the third best graduate engineering school in Michigan. Michigan State University and University of Michigan rank ahead of Michigan Tech in the state rankings, at second and first respectively.

Michigan Tech also ranks as the fourth best undergraduate engineering school in the state, it is number 158 within the best undergraduate schools in the U.S.

Dean of the College of Engineering, Michelle Scherer, said she wants to recognize the graduate students at Michigan Tech, as they help keep the program as strong as it is.

“Our engineering graduate students, working closely with faculty and staff, are the heart and soul that drive the innovation and discovery happening here at Michigan Tech,” she said. “One of our highest priorities is creating an environment for them where they can thrive and embrace the challenges and joy of doing the hard work to find real solutions to tomorrow’s needs.”

Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School, Will Cantrell, said while he is happy about the national and international recognition, Michigan Tech’s engineering program is still focused on producing top professional candidates.

“It is gratifying to see Michigan Tech’s engineering programs consistently recognized among the top 100 in the nation, which reflects our commitment to high-impact graduate education and the advanced research conducted by our faculty and students,” he said. “While these numbers are a point of pride, our true focus remains on providing a rigorous environment where graduate researchers can develop the expertise needed to lead in industry and academia.

Michigan Tech’s designation as a premier R1 institution last year has been widely celebrated by the Board of Trustees, faculty and Tech’s administration as a huge accomplishment.

The financial, research and global recognition is a step in the right direction for Michigan Tech, but according to MLive, Tech’s graduate engineering program did not budge from last year’s placement at number 89.
