MARQUETTE — The body of a 21 year-old Northern Michigan University student, missing since February and feared drowned, was discovered in the waters of Lake Superior Friday. According to a press release from Marquette City Police, at around 3:30 Friday afternoon, the body of Trenton Massey was located submerged in the water of the Lower Harbor, north of the Shiras Dock in the City of Marquette. Massey’s body was discovered by volunteers from Hybrid Robotics, an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) manufacturing company located in Traverse City.

Following the discovery, divers from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office recovered his body, which was turned over to UPHS EMS and transported to UPHS-Marquette pending an autopsy.

Over the past two months, multiple agencies and volunteers assisted with the search from land, air, ice and water. The Marquette Police Department would like to thank everyone who helped during this difficult time. Those included Hybrid Robotics, Antrim County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Michigan University Police Department, UPHS-Marquette EMS, Marquette City Fire Department, Michigan State Police K9s and Marine Services Team, US Coast Guard Station Marquette, US Army, Michigan DNR Conservation Officers, Alger County Sheriff’s Office, No One Left Behind K9 Search and Rescue, Northern Michigan University, Frontline Strong, and numerous volunteers from the community.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

A memorial was held in Marquette on April 16 for Massey. The memorial involved lowering the NMU Wildcat flag to half-mast on the NMU campus, with a service taking place during the afternoon at the Jacobetti Complex and a flower-throwing tribute during the evening at Lower Harbor. “I just want to say thank you for the last two months, the last four years, the last 21-and-a-half years,” said Sarah Brock, Massey’s mother, at the flower-throwing tribute. “Everybody touched Trenton’s life.”
