Deceased western U.P. child identified

Darwin E. Olson

IRONWOOD — A Facebook posting and obituary notice from a western Upper Peninsula Funeral Home together have identified the two-year-old child who was found deceased last month in Ironwood Township.

Darwin E. Olson, who, less than two weeks prior to his third birthday, was found March 19 outside of his Ironwood Township home. A Facebook posting notes that he had been struck by a passing vehicle, which, apparently, did not stop.

The child’s obituary appeared on the website of Lakeside Memorial Chapel, Inc., of Wakefierld, which is about 12 miles from Ironwood.

“The driver kept going, and according to his mom, still hasn’t been found,” the Facebook posting noted. “The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office has released very little information about the case. Darwin’s mother tells me investigators aren’t even sharing much info with her.”

Indeed, beyond confirming the child’s death, officers with the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office have said little, publicly, about the tragedy and its investigation. The greater Ironwood community, however, has rallied to the family’s support, holding a balloon release and establishing a roadside memorial to the child.

Anyone with any information about the situation is asked to call the nearest law enforcement agency.
