“I’m just very excited that the community came out to support education and the area students for career and technical education skills,” he said. “It was a pretty loud and clear message, and I’m grateful and humbled for the support.”
HOUGHTON – Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Kelly Wednesday said canvassing of the May 5 special election in the four-county area is now complete and the official results have been released.
• Baraga Area Schools Sinking Fund Millage proposal passed, 240-206. The proposal failed in Portage Township, however, 23 -29.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Area Schools Operating Millage proposal passed, 270-115.
• Ewen-Trout Creek Consolidated School District Bond proposal, failed in Houghton County, 14-14, but passed 621-224 across all precincts.
• Copper Country Intermediate School District CTE Millage Renewal proposal passed, 5,429-1,425.
In response to the election, CCISD Superintendent James Rautiola said, “”I’m just very excited that the community came out to support education and the area students for career and technical education skills,” he said. “It was a pretty loud and clear message, and I’m grateful and humbled for the support.”
A canvass is a post-election process that aggregates and confirms that all valid ballots cast in the election are accurately counted and included in the final election results. Through the canvass, election officials determine whether to count provisional ballots, resolve ballot marking errors, adjudicate voter intent, and reconcile the number of ballots cast with the number of people who voted.
Kelly said there were no surprises during the canvassing.
“Everything went perfect. I’m so happy,” she said. “There were only two military and overseas ballots that came in from Eagle Harbor Township, in Keweenaw County, so that was two yes votes.” The two yes votes were for the CTE millage renewal, she said.
