CHASSELL — Fresh produce, flowers, local meats and more are coming to the Keweenaw starting next week. Weekly Farmers markets will take up shop downtown in many local communities including Lake Linden, Houghton, Chassell, Calumet and Hancock.

The Lake Linden Farmer’s Market starts June 5 in the Village Park off of M-26. It starts at 3 p.m. and runs every Friday through September. Market Manager Sarah Batzel said there’s plenty to do at the market other than check out local produce stands.

“We have live music every Friday during the market at the park. We also are right at the playground, so it’s like a family friendly market,” she said. “Kids play at the playground, parents shop, listen to the music — kind of like a whole vibe for Friday night.”

Batzel said there are arts and crafts vendors at the market in addition to typical produce and farm vendors.

Starting on June 10, the Chassell Farmers Market begins at 3 p.m. Wednesdays through September. It is located at Chassell Township Centennial Park off of US-41 in downtown Chassell.

Chassell is, historically, the Strawberry capitol of the Upper Peninsula. The community will host the Copper Country Strawberry Festival in July to celebrate its long-standing tradition. The Chasserll Farmer’s Market also welcomes arts and crafts vendors. Co-founder James Niemala said the Chassell Farmers Market is less stringent with its vendor requirements and welcomes anyone to sell what they want.

“We don’t have as many rules,” he said. “We kind of try to have a wide variety of things. Have people come on in and let the market — the customer — tell us what’s really wanted.

Niemala said you can find anything from Tupperware, to plants, produce, sausage, knit goods, trinkets and more.

From the Ground Farmers Market Collective operates both Houghton and Calumet Farmers Markets. The Houghton market will start June 9, running weekly on Tuesdays through the beginning of October at Houghton Downtown Pier. The Calumet Farmers Market will start June 13 and run Saturdays through the beginning of October at Agassiz Park.

According to the organization’s website, the markets are open to local farmers, food producers and artisans. In addition to the usual farmers market fare, local businesses, organizations, as well as musicians and entertainers are welcome.

Hancock’s Farmers Market is under new management this year, according to its Facebook page.

“The Hancock Thursday Market lives on,” the April 24 post reads. “With a fresh approach. We’re developing new options for parking, new signage, no vendor fees and lots of expanded vendor options from hot food to bakery.”

The market is located on Quincy Green in downtown Hancock and will take place Thursdays from 2-6 p.m., starting on June 18.

Starting at $3.50/week.
