The next phase

Houghton announces traffic flow update for the Gateway Project

Chelsea Bossert/Daily Mining Gazette Construction of the new UP State Bank building at 902 College Ave., part of the Gateway Project, continued through the winter months. The project now moves into the next phase and will include some changes to traffic flow.

Houghton — The City of Houghton will implement a new traffic pattern on East Lakeshore Drive as construction progresses on the Gateway project, which includes the new bank building and the upcoming condo development. The bank structure is well underway, and foundation work for the condos is scheduled to begin before summer.

Since last fall, East Lakeshore Drive has operated as one‒way through traffic. With the start of condo foundation work, the City will close East Lakeshore Drive to through traffic. This change is necessary to safely expand the construction zone and allow both projects to continue on schedule.

To support this next phase:

• The construction fence will shift north, creating space for continued sitework on the bank building

• Access from Lake Street to the rear of Lambda Chi Alpha and Alpha Sigma Tau will remain open, ensuring residents and service vehicles can still reach those properties

• Traffic will not be able to continue west from that access point

• The parking lot north of the bank/condo site will remain open, with entry and exit available only from the west side

According to a press release from Houghton Community and Development Manager Danielle Perkowitz, “These adjustments are expected to remain in place throughout the condo foundation phase. The City will provide updates as work progresses and traffic patterns evolve and appreciates everyone’s patience.”
