A rainy month

June was wetter and warmer than average

Photo from Facebook Rains led to flooding in downtown L'Anse as seen in this photo taken June 24 on the 100 block of East Broad Street. Portions of Baraga county recorded more than seven inches of rain over the span of about three days.

MARQUETTE — If you thought the month of June felt a bit wetter than normal, you’d be right. And if you thought it was colder as well, you’d be wrong.

Joseph Phillips, meteorologist with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration office in Marquette said that June, as a whole, in the Copper Country experienced a wet month with near normal to slightly above normal temperatures. “The hottest period was the first half of the month,” Phillips said, “when the region climbed into the upper 70s to low 80s for most days.”

He said most locations observed rainfall for more than half the days in the month of June, with notable heavier rain and thunderstorms occurring on June 9, 11, 12, and 25. “There were also a few windy days observed in the Keweenaw June 13 & 14 with the Houghton County Airport and Copper Harbor recording winds between 45 and 52 mph at times.”

Phillips said the regions heaviest rainfall was concentrated in Baraga County with Herman recording just under three inches of for that day at 2.96 inches. In Covington 1.76 inches of rain fell between June 11 & 12. During that two day period, Kearsarge reported 2.14 inches, Quincy Hill got 1.59 and Herman received an additional inch and a half.

As expected, Phillips said, that much rain in such a concentrated amount caused some issues. “June 25th resulted in flooded roadways in downtown L’Anse after the area received 1 to 3 inches of rainfall in a matter of hours. Quarter sized hail (1 inch) was also reported in Ontonagon County near Paulding.”

Not surprisingly, Herman received the highest precipitation for the month of June at 7.35 inches, most of it coming down June 9, 12 and 25. That amount was nearly double the monthly rainfall in areas throughout the Keweenaw. Heavy amounts for the month included Baraga (3.56″), Covington (3.8″), Kearsarge ((3.51″) and Quincy Hill (2.8).

The first half of June produced the warmest temperatures of the month as well. Baraga was the monthly hot spot with a temperature of 86 degrees recorded on June 4. Temps of 80 plus recorded between June 4 – 9 in Herman, Covington, Kearsarge, Paulding and Watton.

The month will end on a hot streak with a heat advisory in effect until 8 p.m. today. Daytime highs could top out in the low 90s today and tomorrow. During periods of high heat, the National Weather Service advises to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

The Weather Service further advices taking extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose

fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Folks are further warned not to leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
