Drowning in Lake Superior
Body discovered near McLain State Park
HANCOCK TOWNSHIP — A man from Hancock died Wednesday from an apparent drowning incident. The body of the man who apparently drowned in Lake Superior at McLean’s State Park, was located early Wednesday morning. Hancock Police dispatched an officer to the scene in response to a call, but Michigan State Police Calumet Post is handling the investigation.
Hancock Police arrived at the scene in the event the victim was still alive and needed resuscitation, but upon arrival, the victim was already deceased.
While law enforcement have yet to release any names, a statement sent to the Daily Mining Gazette from the Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service-Hancock Chapel indicated 57 year-old Daniel Carlson of Hancock “unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, from an apparent drowning accident.”
When contacted Wednesday afternoon, Hancock Police said they could not comment on the incident, because it was not known where in the investigation MSP was at the time, or if a report had been issued by the County Medical Examiner.
