Bridge will not go up evening of June 12

Graham Jaehnig/Daily Mining Gazette The Portage Lake Lift Bridge will restrict marine traffic on June 12 for the Bridgefest Parade.

HOUGHTON – On Friday, June 12, from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. the Portage Lake Lift Bridge will not lift for marine traffic, according to Dan Weingarten, communications representative with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

“MDOT has received permission to restrict lifts for boats at the Portage Lake Lift Bridge during Bridgefest,” he said. “The U.S. Coast Guard has authorized MDOT to make the changes in the Lift Bridge operation.”

The Bridgefest parade is scheduled to cross the lift bridge between Houghton and Hancock. Mariners should provide advance notice directly to the bridge operator by calling 906-482-7552.

The parade will follow its traditional route, lining up on South Lincoln Drive in Hancock, starting at 5:30 p.m. The procession will travel through downtown Hancock, cross the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, then proceed through downtown Houghton, ending just past the Franklin Square.

This year marks the 66th anniversary of the bridge and the 39th Bridgefest celebration. The four-day festival, June 11-14, will include live music, fireworks, helicopter rides, waterfront vendors, family activities, sporting events, classic cars, and the famous parade connecting our communities.

Starting at $3.50/week.
